THE 2008 VOLVO OCEAN RACE WILL START FROM ALICANTE IN SPAIN

IN THE AUTUMN OF 2008

From the live Webcams you can get an idea of Alicante port.

Alicante on the Mediterranean Costa Blanca of Spain has something for everyone.

The Volvo Ocean Race, VOR, formerly known as the Whitbread Round The World Race, takes place about every 4 years.
It used always to start in England but in 2005/2006 all that changed.

The 2005/2006 event also began in Spain, from Vigo in Galicia.
It seems Spain has gained a reputation for knowing how to stage major events.

The VOR is a team event which takes place in stages and involves in-port races.
The race takes something like 8 months to complete and covers over 30,000 miles.

The overall winner of the 2001 - 2002 race was a German boat "Illbruck Challenge"
2005/2006 saw success for ABN AMRO 1 of The Netherlands.
